The source of the rug comes from the book Tapis du Caucase - Rugs of the Caucasus, Ian Bennett & Aziz Bassoul, The Nicholas Sursock Museum, Beirut, Lebanon 2003, nr.7 and Oriental Rugs Volume 1 Caucasian, Ian Bennett, Oriental Textile Press, Aberdeen 1993, nr.17 and Caucasian Carpets, E. Gans-Reudin, Thames and Hudson, Switzerland 1986, pg.122. This is another handsome example of the "Sewan" Kazak design group, a single large cruciform medallion with octagon ends from the late 19th century, southwest Caucasus area. The most striking feature of this carpet is that the kochak (ram's-horns) motif is virtually the sole decorative element. The medallion is decorated by ram's horns, hourglasses, and guarding dogs in pairs or superimposed. The design of this rug is interpreted and soft colors are chosen for this rug.
