The source of the rug comes from the book Oriental Rugs Volume 1 Caucasian, Ian Bennett, Oriental Textile Press, Aberdeen 1993, pg.160. A distinctive group of Talish rugs is named after the southeast coastal town of Lenkoran. They are distinguished primarily by their design, which consists almost always of two or more large horned medallions on the vertical axis. These medallions are derived from dragon rugs and, indeed, it requires no great leap of the imagination to see the close connection between Lenkoran medallions and the pair of outward-facing dragons flanking palmettes, after which the group of Caucasian rugs made from the late 16th to the 18th centuries is named. On later rugs of the transitional or floral type, made probably in the 18th century, this dragon and palmette arrangement has been reduced to a single outward curving white bar surrounding an octagon, almost exactly the motif associated with Lenkorans and, of course, one which, in more stylized form, can be seen at either end of the so-called Kasim-Usag rugs. The bars which are usually found between the medallions on Lenkoran rugs, and which end in a 'St. Andrew's cross' arrangement, is thus the highly stylized remains of the serrated-leaf lattice which once adorned the field of dragon rugs. The design of the rug is interpreted by our designers, and soft colors are chosen for this rug.
